About 2 Arrow Labs
2 Arrow Labs is a New York engineering studio for deep tech teams. We take on the technical work other teams gave up on.
We build hard systems and hand them over with tests and docs. We read codebases nobody fully understands and write down what they should do. We set up AI coding agents and measure how they do on real code.
The role
We are hiring a Senior Software Engineer to build hard technical systems for deep tech teams. You will take a client's idea, build it, and hand it over with tests and docs.
On a typical project you might turn research code into a production service. You might build infrastructure nobody on the client's staff has built before. The work spans design, code, tests and direct work with client engineers.
This is a senior individual contributor role. You will own large parts of a project, make calls when the problem is unclear, and keep the client informed.
What you'll do
- Build the hard part. Design and write the system the client could not build in house, in stages they can review.
- Ship it with tests. Write tests with every change, so the client's team can trust and extend the code.
- Hand it over well. Write the docs and walk the client's engineers through the code until they can run it.
- Work with client engineers. Scope the work with them, show progress every week, and raise risks early.
- Use our AI tools with care. Work with our own AI coding tools and check their output as closely as your own.
- Improve how we work. Turn what you learn on one project into methods and tools for the next one.
How this role fits the team
You work directly with the client's engineers and with us. Most projects run about eight weeks. You own your part of the build and ask for help early when you need it.
What success looks like
- Clients run the code you built without calling us.
- Your tests catch problems before the client does.
- Your docs and walkthrough let the client's team take over fast.
- Clients trust your calls because you explain tradeoffs in plain words.
What you'll bring
The following are requirements for this role.
- Shipped systems. Eight or more years building software that other people run in production.
- Hard problems solved. A record of building things that were new to you and to your team.
- Strong code and tests. Fluency in at least two of Python, TypeScript, Rust, Go or C++.
- Clear writing. You explain designs and tradeoffs in plain words to engineers and to CTOs.
- Ownership. You take a vague problem, make it concrete, and see it through.
- AI coding tools. You use AI coding tools every day and know where they fail.
Nice to have
These are not day-one requirements. They help you contribute sooner or grow the role over time.
- Experience turning research code into production systems.
- Work in ML infrastructure, distributed systems or compilers.
- Open source work, technical writing or talks.
- Experience working with clients as a consultant or a founder.
Compensation
The base salary range for this role is $250,000 to $320,000. Contract work is paid at roughly $175 to $250 an hour. Pay depends on experience, scope and location. These figures are starting pay for candidates based in the United States. If your number is outside the range, write to us anyway.
Benefits
Full-time roles include four weeks of paid time off each year.
